Woven Mother of Pearl Kimonos

During my last visit to Japan I went to the coast of Koyoto Prefecture to visit Tamiya Raden, a world leading Japanese Weaving Company.

The Tango Peninsula has the perfect climate for silk production, and the shoreline to provide inspiration for weavers. Abalone, or Mother of Pearl shell has become one of several materials to be woven into the silk of this region.

The process  of making the shell pliable is a closely guarded secret, but the marquetry of shell into the design before cutting into threadlike strips before weaving with silk was plain to see.
Pictures don’t convey the lustre, weight, intricacies, or the way the iridescent colours change in different light.
