A Japanese friend had a special birthday, and I decided to make her something based on Turtle (kame), a deeply revered symbol of longevity, good luck, wisdom, and protection.

This is part of a series of work using Sublimation Heat Printing, a technique for printing on fabric. Giant Turtles were caught almost to extinction by the Victorians and then Edwardians to feed the fashion for Turtle Soup.

These Textiles Pieces were made with a heat press using collage, paint and stencil work. You need particular papers and paints, and it will only work on man-made fibre, which is a shame. These are some pieces I made for a recent show about food.
