orange flowersThis stunning wall art is made from a silk vintage Japanese kimono known as a Kuro-tomesode where the pattern travels around the bottom across the panels.

The design structure, where a pattern is glimpsed as the mist fades beneath and the cloud rises, is called kumodori. This use of natural transition is part of Japanese culture.

The flowers are chrysanthemums (kiku) a symbol of regal beauty, rejuvenation and longevity.

The image has been embroidered with gold threads “couched” or laid on the fabric surface and stitched down with fine silk threads. The technique is called shusu.

The piece is hung by bespoke rails, handmade of blackened waxed steel.
