This unique, eye-catching scarf is made from the silk of a vintage Japanese kimono.
The rich textured pattern is handmade using a traditional technique called Shibori, a form a delicate tie-dye. The small circles are kanoke shibori made by binding tiny pinches of cloth, and the petals made by sewing and gathering to resist the silver-grey, whilst the orange was applied by hand separately.
The design depicts auspicious motifs including a chequered format known as paving stones (ichimatsu), overlapping circles (shippo), and blossoms (ume).
The fringe is Victorian silk and hand dyed and knotted to match.
