Arashi 1This beautiful scarf is hand made from the silk of a vintage Japanese kimono.

The silk fabric is a rinzu weave with a design of must (kasumi) symbolising transition and links to the natural cycle.

The a texture and pattern are produced by a traditional shibori technique dating from the 8th Century called Arashi. It involves twisting, wrapping and binding of the cloth around wooden or copper poles. The fabric is twisted and wrapped diagonally around the pole, then bound. Arashi (meaning “storm”) results in diagonal stripes that are reminiscent of storm driven rain.

The fringe is Victorian and has been dyed and hand knotted to match.
